Quick facts:

  • 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine
  • 77kW and 138Nm of torque
  • 5-speed Manual gearbox

The Suzuki Grand Vitara has always been a contender in the compact SUV segment, offering a blend of affordability, and practicality. We drove the entry-level Grand Vitara GL variant that we believe to delivers exceptional value without compromising on essential features.

Exterior
At first glance, the Suzuki Grand Vitara GL gives off a sense of understated elegance. While lacking some of the aesthetic flourishes found in higher trim levels, such as the GLX, it maintains Suzuki's signature styling cues, highlighted by a distinctive front grille and LED headlights. The absence of GLX trim alloy wheels may deter some, but the GL's practicality-focused design ensures it remains a functional and attractive option for urban and adventurous drivers alike.

Performance
Powered by a 1.5-liter engine, the Grand Vitara GL delivers 77 kW and 138 Nm of torque. While not the most potent of powertrains, it provides ample acceleration for city driving and moderate highway cruising. The 5-speed manual transmission we had on test offers greater control over gear selection, mitigating the need for additional power on overtaking manoeuvres. However, those accustomed to automatic transmissions may find the lack of power more pronounced as the automatic transmission only offers 4 gears.

Safety and Technology
One standout feature of the Grand Vitara GL is its hill start assist, enhancing driver confidence when navigating steep inclines especially the inclines found in Cape Town city. While lacking some of the advanced driver assistance systems found in higher trims, such as adaptive cruise control or lane-keeping assist, it prioritizes fundamental safety features to ensure a secure driving experience. The intuitive infotainment system provides essential connectivity options such as Wireless AppleCarPlay and Android Auto, keeping drivers informed and entertained on their journeys.

Interior Comfort and Space
Step inside the Grand Vitara GL, and you're greeted by a spacious and ergonomically designed cabin. Despite its entry-level status, the GL boasts ample legroom and cargo space such as 310 litres of boot space, making it an ideal companion for both daily commutes and extended road trips. While some may not be a fan the absence of premium amenities like a panoramic sunroof or leather upholstery, the GL focuses on practicality and affordability, catering to drivers who prioritize function over frills. During our time with the Suzuki grand Vitara GL we average 6.2l/100km compared to their claimed consumption figures of 5.6/100km.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the Suzuki Grand Vitara GL offers a compelling proposition for budget-conscious buyers seeking a versatile and reliable compact SUV. While it may lack some of the bells and whistles found in higher trim levels, its affordability, practicality, and robust performance make it a standout choice in its segment and a bargain. Whether navigating city streets or embarking on off-road adventures, the Grand Vitara GL proves itself as a capable and dependable companion for drivers seeking value without compromise.
