All-New JMC Vigus Lands in SA: A 123 kW Bakkie "Built for More"

By Jack Dickson

The bakkie wars just got a new contender. With its 123 kW turbodiesel heart, a massive 12.8-inch digital screen, and a mecha-inspired look that demands attention, this isn't just a workhorse—it's a statement. We break down the 430 Nm performance, the fortress-level chassis, and why this budget-friendly bakkie is "Built for More."

JMC is officially making its comeback in South Africa, under the new stewardship of the Salvador Caetano Group, with the launch of the all-new Vigus double-cab. Positioned as a direct challenger to Mzansi’s established bakkie heavyweights, the new Vigus arrives with a clear mission: to prove that rugged durability and modern technology don’t have to carry a million-rand price tag. Validated through over 4 million kilometers of intensive global testing, this newcomer is pitching itself as the ultimate "all-rounder" for workhorse duties and weekend adventures alike.

Exterior: "Mecha-Inspired" Ruggedness and High-Strength Engineering

The all-new Vigus introduces a bold, "mecha-inspired" design language that gives it a physically imposing presence on the road. The front end is dominated by a squared-off motif with the JMC name displayed in bold lettering between sleek LED daytime running lights. Functionality is baked into the design, featuring 17-inch alloy wheels and a low-profile cargo bed height of just 750mm to improve loading efficiency. Measuring 5,335 mm in length, it offers a substantial footprint, but the real strength lies underneath; the chassis is crafted from 420-grade high-strength steel, offering what JMC calls a "fortress-level" foundation for superior stability and safety.

Interior: Digital Tech and Ergonomic Comfort

Inside, the Vigus proves that a dedicated workhorse can still offer a sophisticated digital experience. The cabin features ergonomic seats designed by the world-renowned brand Lear, alongside a high-tech 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This is paired with a 9-inch floating digital instrument cluster, giving the driver clear access to all vital vehicle data. Rear passengers are well-catered for with 822mm of row spacing and a nearly flat floor hump, while the inclusion of cruise control, a multifunction steering wheel, and a reverse camera ensures a comfortable and connected environment for the modern driver.

Engine Specifications: 2.5-Litre Turbodiesel Grunt

Powering the entire Vigus range is a robust 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that delivers a solid 123 kW of power and 430 Nm of torque (410 Nm for the manual). This engine is optimized for low-rpm, high-torque delivery, ensuring impressive climbing ability even when the vehicle is fully loaded. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual gearbox or a refined eight-speed automatic transmission. The flagship 4x4 model further benefits from a rear differential lock and a BorgWarner four-wheel-drive system, making it surprisingly surefooted when the tarmac ends.

South African Pricing and Value Proposition

JMC has priced the Vigus to be a serious disruptor, offering one of the most competitive entry points into the double-cab segment in South Africa. The local lineup is structured as follows:

As JMC expands its footprint to 40 active dealerships, the Vigus stands as a powerful testament to the "Built for More" philosophy.
