All new Toyota Hilux revelead

The Toyota Hilux, the undisputed king of South African roads, has been completely reborn. Toyota has officially unveiled the ninth-generation Hilux, confirming that this global icon will now embrace a future of electrified power. Keeping its promise of legendary Quality, Durability, and Reliability (QDR), the new Hilux is shaking up the market by introducing its first-ever Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) version and a smart Hybrid model.

For South African enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike, this new Hilux delivers a massive leap in power, technology, and style, ensuring the world’s favourite bakkie is ready for anything.

Hilux Engine Lineup (BEV, Hybrid, and Diesel)

Toyota’s "multipath" strategy means you get options—powerful, efficient options—ensuring the right Hilux for the job, from the urban jungle to the deep bushveld.

Hilux BEV: The All-Electric Powerhouse

This is the biggest news: a zero-emission Hilux. Expected to arrive in late 2025/early 2026, the Hilux BEV is built on the same famously tough body-on-frame structure. It is aimed at fleets and private owners who want serious off-road ability with clean electric power. The Hilux BEV runs on permanent All-Wheel Drive (AWD), getting its energy from a 59.2 kWh battery pack. Toyota has armored and protected this battery for water crossings, meaning it maintains excellent wading capability. Tentative performance figures confirm a respectable towing capacity of 1,600 kg and a range of approximately 240 km. It also features a clever Multi-Terrain Select system to automatically optimize the bakkie's performance for mud, sand, or rocks.

Hilux Hybrid 48V: The Efficient Workhorse

This model is set to become the popular choice across Europe and a key offering here. The Hilux Hybrid 48V boosts the popular 2.8-litre engine with a small electric motor and battery, delivering noticeable improvements in performance. This mild-hybrid system makes starting off and accelerating much smoother and quieter, while also maintaining the massive 3,500 kg towing capacity and one-tonne payload that the Hilux is known for. Crucially, the hybrid components are positioned high up, ensuring the bakkie keeps its impressive 700 mm water wading capability.

Future and Classic Engines

While the Hybrid leads the charge, the robust 2.8-litre diesel engine remains a core part of the offering, particularly in markets like South Africa, alongside the 2.7-litre petrol plant. Toyota is also looking forward, confirming a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric (FCEV) Hilux is planned for 2028.

Design and Technology

The all-new Hilux is defined by its "Tough and Agile" design theme, giving it a commanding and modern presence that looks strong both on the worksite and in the city.

The front end is bold, featuring sleek new headlights and a central bar proudly stamping the TOYOTA name. The BEV model gets a unique, smoother front fascia with no traditional grille to enhance aerodynamics. The popular four-door Double Cab is now the standard body style across the entire range, maximizing space for passengers and gear.

High-Tech Interior Upgrade

Inside, the new Hilux feels more luxurious, borrowing design cues from the new Toyota Land Cruiser. The cabin is focused on a fully digital experience. The driver gets a customizable 12.3-inch digital screen paired with a large central multimedia touchscreen (up to 12.3 inches). All controls for the 4x4 and off-road systems are neatly grouped together for fast, intuitive use. The introduction of Electric Power Steering (EPS) makes the bakkie feel more responsive on the road and easier to maneuver in tight spaces, improving the overall driving experience.

The advanced safety package, Toyota T-Mate, is packed with new features like Proactive Driving Assist and a Blind Spot Monitor, giving drivers extra peace of mind. Toyota has also confirmed the new Hilux will receive software updates over the air, ensuring its technology remains state-of-the-art for years to come.
