In a market ripe for innovation and sustainability, the GWM ORA 3 arrives as a breath of fresh air, marking its territory as the most affordable electric vehicle (EV) in South Africa. GWM, known very well for blending affordability with advanced technology, has crafted a vehicle that doesn't just make economic sense but also stands out in terms of design and functionality.

Exterior Design:
The GWM ORA 3 is a head-turner. With design cues reminiscent of the Mini Cooper and Volkswagen Beetle, it also boasts elements inspired by Porsche. This isn't a coincidence, as the former lead designer from Porsche now heads the design team at ORA. The result is a car that's both cute and elegant, with a boldness that sets it apart on the road. The round LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lights and the unique honeycomb design elements add to its quirky yet sophisticated aesthetic.

Despite its compact appearance, the ORA 3 surprises with its spaciousness. The rear lights and brake light, integrated into the back window, add a touch of modernity with their dance-like activation sequence. Our unit was coated in an LB Green color which adds a fresh, modern look to its overall design.

Charging and Efficiency:
Charging the ORA 3 is straightforward. It supports both AC and DC charging, with DC fast charging taking about an hour and AC charging requiring 6-7 hours. For those using a standard wall socket at home, an overnight charge of 10-12 hours is necessary. In terms of cost, the ORA 3 proves economical. A mere 150 Rand can take the vehicle from 50% to a full 100% charge, providing a range of up to 300 kilometers.

Interior Comfort and Technology:
Step inside, and the ORA 3 continues to impress. The two-tone finish and quilted seats with fine stitching exude quality and comfort. The car features a wireless charging pad, modern air vents, and a multifunctional steering wheel.

The interior is surprisingly spacious, providing ample room for both the driver and passengers. The boot, offering around 200 litres of space, is practical for everyday use, although slightly smaller compared to traditional combustion engine vehicles.

Driving Experience and Safety:
The ORA 3 is powered by a 63 kWh battery, producing 126 kW and 250 Nm of torque. This power is more than sufficient for everyday driving, making the car feel responsive and agile. The vehicle includes multiple driving modes—Normal, Sport, Eco, Auto, and Eco Plus—each offering a distinct driving experience tailored to various needs.

Safety is a priority with the ORA 3, featuring a plethora of standard safety systems, including Hill Assist and Auto Hold. These features ensure that even in hilly terrains, the car remains secure and easy to handle.

Some standard safety systems include:

  • Dual Srs Airbags, Front Side Airbags, Side Curtain Airbags & Front Centre Airbag.
  • Secondary Collision Mitigation (SCM)
  • Keyless Entry,
  • Traffic-Sign Recognition
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Auto Emergency Braking – Pedestrian & Cyclist Detection (AEB, AEB-P/B)
  • Lane-Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Lane-Change Assist (LCA)
  • 360° Panoramic Camera e.t.c

Conclusion:
The GWM ORA 3 is a compelling option for those looking to enter the electric vehicle market without breaking the bank. Its unique design, spacious and well-appointed interior, and efficient performance make it a standout in its class. While it may have a few minor drawbacks, such as a less-than-ideal sound system and occasional lag in system responsiveness, these are overshadowed by its overall benefits and affordability. For city dwellers, the ORA 3's nimble handling and compact size make it an ideal choice for navigating tight urban spaces.

In summary, the GWM ORA 3 is a testament to how electric vehicles can be both affordable and stylish, setting a new standard in the South African automotive market. With the ORA 3, GWM has not only made electric vehicles more accessible but also delivered a product that’s stylish, practical, and ready to make a significant impact on South Africa’s roads.
