Introduction:
The Omoda C5 marks a bold entry from China into the highly competitive crossover segment. With its unorthodox design and feature-rich package, it promises to shake things up and challenge perceptions. Let's take a closer look at what this unique vehicle has to offer.

Exterior Design:
The first thing that strikes you about the Omoda C5 is its distinctive appearance. While opinions on its looks may vary, there’s no denying that it stands out from the crowd. The front end features a massive grille that has sparked various comparisons. Despite these mixed reactions, the grille, coupled with sleek sequential indicators and unconventional headlight placement, gives the C5 a bold and modern aesthetic. The vehicle also sports 18-inch wheels with red brake calipers, enhancing its sporty appeal.

The side profile of the C5 is equally striking, with pronounced hips and bulges that add a sense of dynamism. The rear, perhaps the most visually appealing angle, features a protruding design with a sleek light bar and Omoda lettering prominently displayed. Keyless entry and push-start functionality further enhance the convenience and modern feel of this crossover

Performance and Handling:
Under the hood, the Omoda C5 is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 115 kW and 230 Nm of torque. This powertrain is paired with a CVT, which, despite some common reservations about CVT performance, delivers sufficient torque for a variety of driving conditions. Whether navigating city streets or tackling steep hills, the C5 provides a responsive and adequate driving experience.
However, the CVT does exhibit the characteristic whining noise, particularly under heavy acceleration. The suspension is another mixed bag; while it offers a comfortable ride on smooth city roads, it can become somewhat jarring on rougher terrains. Overall, the steering is firm and precise, ensuring confidence during maneuvers

Interior and Features:
Stepping inside the Omoda C5 reveals a luxurious and well-appointed interior. The bucket-like seats provide excellent support, making long journeys comfortable. The cabin is equipped with dual high-quality, responsive screens that serve both as the instrument cluster and infotainment system. Although wireless Apple CarPlay was not functional during our test, the car does feature ambient lighting, wireless charging, and a flat-bottom steering wheel

The lack of physical buttons for air conditioning might be a drawback for some, but the overall layout and build quality make up for this minor inconvenience. The interior space is ample, making it ideal for small families. With 378 litres of boot space, the C5 offers practical storage solutions for everyday use.

Safety and Technology:
Omoda positions itself as a premium offering without the premium price tag, starting at R447,000. The C5 is packed with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including front and rear parking sensors, rear view camera, cruise control, ABS, EPS to name a few enhancing the C5’s value proposition. While Chinese brands are not traditionally known for fuel efficiency, the Omoda C5 performs reasonably well in this regard. During our test, we averaged 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers which is respectable.

Verdict:
The Omoda C5 is a compelling entry in the crossover segment. It offers a unique design, a host of standard features, and a competitive price point. While it may not appeal to everyone, those looking for a distinctive vehicle that stands out from the crowd will find much to appreciate in the C5. Its combination of bold aesthetics, practical functionality, and advanced technology make it a strong contender in its category.
