Driven - Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line

Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line
The Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line

Quick Facts

  • Price: From R548 300
  • Engine: 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine
  • Power/Torque: 140kW / 320Nm
  • Transmission: Seven-speed DSG Transmission

The Volkswagen T-Roc slots above the T-Cross and below the Tiguan in the Volkswagen T-SUV family (T-Cross, T-Roc, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and Touareg) and while I was impressed at the launch in November of 2020, spending more time with it just cemented that statement, this time around, I spent time with the flagship R-Line model.

Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the T-Roc sprints from a standstill to 100 in 7.2 seconds but it feels quicker than that. It’s equipped with a launch control program and will sprint off the line like a golf, which was essentially one thing I loved with my time with the T-Roc, the low sitting position which is reminiscent of the Golf. After all, it is on the MQB platform and shares the same EA888 engine as the Golf 7. Power figures come in at 140kw/320nm of torque and power is sent to all four wheels via its seven-speed DSG gearbox which is impossible to fault.

Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line
The Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line features a sloping roofline giving it a coupe shape.

The Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line is equipped with many driver aids that make it easier for the driver and ensure the occupants' safety. Here are 5 of my favourite:

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keep assist & Blindspot detection
  • Autonomous Emergency braking
  • Park Assist
  • Pedestrian monitoring

In terms of looks, the T-Roc is ultimately a coupe SUV. The sloping roofline gives it that coupe shape while the rest of the car looks exquisite. LED head and taillights are present while the D-shaped daytime running lights also work as turn signals and are placed on the bottom of the front bumper.

Exterior round up:

  • Keyless entry
  • 19-inch Suzuka Alloys
  • Roof rails
Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line Interior
The interior features some high-quality graphics as well as a full active digital drivers display.

You step inside and the T-Roc R-Line receives Vienna leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 9.2-inch touchscreen with gesture controls that uses wireless app connect. The digital drivers' display is also my favourite in the segment, clear and near visuals which are not too bright nor too dim and offer various customisations.

The T-Roc also makes use of USB-C ports so you will need to either get a USB-C connector or cables (it’s not a huge problem). The multi-functional steering wheel is covered in leather and as it’s the flagship R-Line, it’s stitched in red.

Interior round up:

  • 4 USB-C ports
  • 12V socket
  • Wireless App connect with a wireless charger
  • Vienna leather seats with seat warmers

The Volkswagen T-Roc R-Line drives and handles exceptionally well.

Verdict?

The T-Roc R-Line is a great car, a decent offering for young families, young or established professionals that want to get into the SUV segment without feeling like they have made such a huge jump into the segment. The low sitting position is ultimately my favourite of the car. The various driver aids also make it easier for day to day driving or highway driving something that buyers will love. It’s a sensational product that’s well put together.
