Ford Ranger 2026: EcoBoost Power and New "Sport" Grade Join the Stable

By Jack Dickson

Petrol power is back in a big way. Ford has officially refreshed the Ranger stable for 2026, introducing the 222 kW EcoBoost engine and a stylish new "Sport" grade. With the V6 diesel becoming more accessible and a massive tech upgrade across the board featuring FordPass, the Ranger is doubling down on its "Built Ford Tough" reputation. We break down the new pricing, the performance specs of the turbo-petrol heart, and why the new Sport trim is the new sweet spot for Mzansi’s bakkie buyers.

Ford South Africa is officially shaking up the bakkie segment with a comprehensive refresh of the Ranger line-up for 2026. Since its launch three years ago, the Silverton-assembled Ranger has been a consistent top-seller, and this latest update ensures it remains the benchmark for versatility and performance. The big news for the new year is a streamlined 23-derivative portfolio that introduces a high-output petrol engine and a brand-new trim level designed to bridge the gap between everyday utility and premium adventure.

Exterior: The Arrival of the Ranger Sport and Stealthy Accents

The updated Ranger range introduces a more assertive aesthetic, led by the brand-new Sport derivative. Slotting strategically between the XLT and the Wildtrak, the Sport model features a unique dark-themed exterior with a blacked-out grille, matte-black bumpers, and signature 18-inch machine-faced alloy wheels with black accents. Across the broader range, Ford has refined the visual appeal with new paint options and a shift toward more modern, "stealthy" finishes on higher-spec models. Whether in Single Cab, Super Cab, or Double Cab configuration, the Ranger maintains its muscular stance and functional design, including the integrated rear bumper step that has become a favorite for those accessing the load box.

Interior: A Tech-Forward Symmetrical Sanctuary

Inside, the Ranger continues to dominate the luxury bakkie space by offering a "symmetrical sanctuary" that feels more like a premium SUV than a traditional workhorse. The new Sport grade brings a high-spec cabin to a more accessible price point, featuring an 8-inch digital driver cluster and a vertical 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This system runs Ford’s latest SYNC software and includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For the first time, the range also benefits from FordPass App connectivity, allowing owners to remotely lock/unlock doors or check vehicle health from their smartphones. Higher trims like the Wildtrak and Platinum continue to offer premium leather upholstery, ambient lighting, and high-end audio systems for the ultimate in on-road comfort.

Engine Specifications: The 222 kW EcoBoost and V6 Dominance

The headline for the 2026 refresh is the introduction of the 2.3-litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine. Borrowed from Ford’s global performance stable, this motor delivers a punchy 222 kW of power and 452 Nm of torque, providing an athletic alternative for those who prefer the responsiveness of a turbo-petrol heart. Ford is also making its heavy-hitting 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel (184 kW / 600 Nm) more widely available, now serving as the standard powerplant for the Wildtrak Super Cab 4x4 and the Ranger Tremor. For the workhorse 2.0-litre Single-Turbo diesel models, Ford has introduced a new timing chain system for enhanced durability, with the 10-speed automatic transmission now becoming the standard across almost the entire automatic range.

South African Pricing and Model Range

Ford has optimized the Ranger line-up to offer 23 derivatives, ensuring there is a specification for every type of buyer—from fleet managers to off-road enthusiasts. While individual pricing varies across the extensive body style and engine combinations, the introduction of the Sport and the expanded V6 availability strengthens the Ranger's value proposition in a highly competitive market. Every new Ranger comes backed by Ford’s established ownership peace of mind, including a four-year/120,000 km warranty and a six-year/90,000 km service plan, ensuring Mzansi’s favorite bakkie is ready for years of hard work and weekend play.
