Get ready for five door fun

By Joseph Mashele

The wait is almost over, and the rumours are real! Along with the current three-door range, the hugely popular Suzuki Jimny will soon be offered in a five-door version as well.

At the Auto Expo 2023 in India, the brand-new Suzuki Jimny five door model was unveiled to a global audience. It appeared on stage with the sporty and little Fronx, another brand-new SUV, at the unveiling. Both the Fronx and the five-door Jimny are models that are ready for production; however, the exact arrival date for each vehicle has not yet been determined.

In order to appeal to a larger audience, the new Suzuki Jimny with five doors has been added to the line-up. The off- roader's capabilities, power, or general structural stiffness haven't been altered as a result by Suzuki's engineers.

The popular 1.5-liter petrol engine and two gearbox options, a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic, have been retained by Suzuki. The off- roader's ladder frame chassis, outstanding 210 mm ground clearance, and cutting-edge AllGrip four-wheel drive system, which enables instantaneous switching between 2WD and 4WD, have also been retained. The low range 4WD system from its brother is also included in the new Jimny for skillful off-road driving.

What is different

It is the dimensions that have changed. The new five-door model is 360 mm longer than the three-door version while maintaining the same width and height. The wheelbase has been extended internally by 340 mm, to 2 590 mm. To preserve the off-road capabilities of the Jimny as near to those of the three-door variant as possible, Suzuki has used over fifty years of technical expertise in creating the Jimny and its progenitors and in producing sensibly packed compact vehicles.

The new five-door Jimny has a 36-degree approach angle, a 24 degree breakover angle, and a 50-degree departure angle. The three-door Jimny provides 37 degrees, 28 degrees, and 49 degrees in comparison. The wider footprint has allowed Suzuki to expand the load box and add two extra doors without hurting the off-road capability. Additionally, it has made it possible for the Jimny to have distinctive interior features like front seats that can fold flat to connect with the back seat and form two padded sleeping areas for adventurers who want to spend the night inside the vehicle while on rough terrain.

The new five-door Jimny will hopefully join the existing Jimny line-up in South Africa as soon as possible. At a later time, more details regarding the precise line-up, local launch date, specifications, and range will be made available.
