Second model of the Neue Klasse, the new BMW i3

By Jack Dickson

Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the Bavarian brand or an EV skeptic, the wait is officially over. BMW has just pulled the covers off the second model in its "Neue Klasse" lineup: the all-new, all-electric BMW i3 50 xDrive. This isn't just another electric car; it's a technological quantum leap that reimagines the legendary 3 Series for a new era. At Kumbi-M on Cars, we’ve been tracking the Neue Klasse progress closely, and the production specs are, quite frankly, staggering.

Exterior: A Modern Twist on an Icon

The first thing you’ll notice is that the new i3 is immediately recognizable as a 3 Series, yet it feels entirely fresh. BMW has opted for a 2.5-box design that keeps those hallmark sporty proportions—think a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and a greenhouse that elegantly slopes toward the rear.

The "four-eyed face" we’ve loved for decades has been reimagined. The kidney grille and headlights now merge into a single, innovative light signature that spans the front. Move to the side, and those flared wheel arches give it a wide, planted stance that screams "driving pleasure." It’s clean, precise, and arguably the most cohesive BMW design we’ve seen in years.

Interior: The "Heart of Joy"

Step inside, and it’s a whole new world. The cabin is built around the BMW Panoramic iDrive, which uses the entire width of the windscreen to project information—a massive step up from traditional Head-Up Displays.

BMW is calling the car's brain the "Heart of Joy." This high-performance computer manages the driving dynamics with responses ten times faster than previous systems. The interior manages to feel incredibly spacious (thanks to the EV-only platform) while maintaining that driver-oriented cockpit feel that has always defined the 3 Series.

Performance: 900km Range? Yes, Really.

The specs for the i3 50 xDrive are proper:

  • Power: 345 kW (469 hp)
  • Torque: 645 Nm
  • Drivetrain: Dual-motor xDrive (All-Wheel Drive)
  • Range: Up to 900 km (WLTP cycle)

But the real kicker is the charging. Thanks to 800-volt technology, you can hit DC charging speeds of up to 400 kW. That means you can add 400 km of range in just 10 minutes. It also features bidirectional charging (Vehicle-to-Home and Vehicle-to-Grid), essentially turning your car into a backup battery for your house.

Pricing and Availability

While BMW hasn't dropped the official South African sticker price just yet, global estimates and its positioning suggest a premium but competitive entry point.

  • Estimated Price: Expected to start around R1,400,000 to R1,650,000 (based on current i4 and iX3 positioning).
  • Production: Starts in Munich in August 2026.
  • Deliveries: Expect the first units to hit showrooms by Autumn 2026.

The Neue Klasse represents a bold bet on the future, and on paper, the i3 50 xDrive looks like it might just be the benchmark the segment needs.

What do you think of the new design? Is the 900km range enough to make you switch to electric?
