The all-new fourth-generation Nissan X-Trail

By Joseph Mashele

After a relatively successful market penetration of 20 years, which includes global sales of over seven million, the fourth-generation Nissan X-trail has been launched in Europe with e-Power hybrid technology.

What’s new

The exterior and interior of the new X-Trail both reflect the vehicle's versatile and adventurous character with the floating roof and V-motion grille, which are unique outward design elements to Nissan, standing out. Eye-catching headlamps that seem to be moulded into the bodywork of the front bumper emphasize the modern front look. Along the hood's shut-line, daytime running lights and indicators are likewise hidden.

The all-new Nissan X-Trail's cabin establishes a new standard for the sector in terms of higher ambiance, distinctive design, and improved usability. The driver has access to cutting-edge Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies, and every interaction is comfortable and high-quality. The cabin's cutting-edge design and functionality are enhanced by new premium materials, clever features, and thoughtful details.

The drivetrain

The new Nissan X-Trail will be the second vehicle in Nissan's European line-up to have the company's ground-breaking e-POWER propulsion technology (exclusive to Nissan), which is an innovative approach to electrification that provides an EV-like driving experience without the need for recharging. A high-output battery and powertrain coupled with a petrol engine with variable compression ratio, a power generator, an inverter, and a 150kW front electric motor make up the e-POWER tech.

The distinguishing feature of the e-POWER tech is that the electric motor totally drives the wheels while the petrol engine is just utilised to generate electricity. This enables the engine to operate continuously within its ideal range, resulting in higher fuel efficiency in urban areas. There is no delay like there would be with an internal combustion engine or conventional hybrid, thanks to the pure electric motor drive. To make overtaking or merging onto a highway easier and more self-assured, the immediate response gives an exciting high torque feel and nimble acceleration.

Safety

Nissan's Intelligent Forward Emergency Braking with Predictive Function provides additional security. Sensors can read the road beyond the vehicles in front to identify sudden braking thanks to powerful radar technology and to lessen the chance of a collision, the system will apply the brakes.

The installation of cutting-edge headlight technology improves safety at night by allowing the light unit to be compact, which improves the X- Trail's aerodynamic efficiency but also modifies the beam's form in response to approaching traffic. Individual matrix LED lights are deactivated when oncoming traffic is identified using a system of matrix LED units that control the direction of the beam, effectively leaving the remainder of the road well-illuminated while without blinding the driver of the approaching car.

The new central airbag, which deploys from between the two front seats to keep the front-row occupants from making contact in the case of a side crash, is another component of the suite of safety technology on board the all-new X-Trail. The new X-Trail is equipped as standard with side, curtain, driver, and passenger airbags in addition to the central airbag.

With the new ProPILOT Assist driving assistance system, the 2019 X-Trail offers better driver support in a wider range of situations. The system, known as ProPILOT Assist with Navi-link, was created to help drivers feel less stressed and tired while they are on the road.

Infotainment

In order to display navigation, entertainment, traffic, or vehicle information, a new 12.3-inch TFT multi-information screen with high definition and complete electronic functionality is available. This screen is controlled by a new tactile dial switch on the steering wheel. As a homage to Nissan's Japanese heritage, a conventional "Kiriko" cut glass texture is also incorporated into the TFT's digital background.

The all-new X-Trail offers an advanced infotainment system with a broad portfolio of connected services to improve comfort and make driving more enjoyable, including seamless smartphone integration, in-car WiFi for up to seven devices, NissanConnect Services, and a dedicated app to interact with and monitor the vehicle.

The Nissan X-Trail will make its way to South Africa in the 2023.
