The All-New Toyota GR86

By Joseph Mashele

The new GR86 coupe, the third Toyota GR model worldwide, was designed with technical know-how from TOYOTA GAZOO Racing. Its design incorporates elements from Toyota's history of sports cars while also incorporating aerodynamic aspects from motorsports.

Quick facts

  • New 2.4-litre naturally aspirated “boxer” engine
  • 174 kW maximum power (@7,000 rpm); 250 Nm maximum torque (@3,700 rpm)
  • Six-speed manual transmission
  • Acceleration time of 0-100 km/h in 6.4 seconds
  • Maximum speed is 226 km/h
  • Fuel consumption of 9.5 l/100km

The new GR86 ups the ante in three key areas: performance thanks to a bigger displacement 2.4-litre powerplant; dynamics thanks to increased body rigidity, lighter weight, and a lower centre of gravity; and sharper aesthetics aka "functional beauty" as a result of adopting motorsports-sourced aerodynamic features. This model sticks to the classic front engine/rear-wheel drive formula and is equipped with the now-familiar naturally aspirated "boxer" engine.

Alongside the GR Supra and GR Yaris, the new GR86 benefits directly from Toyota’s multi-championship-winning involvement in top-level international motorsport with TOYOTA GAZOO Racing.

The GR86's design philosophy is "functional beauty," a union of practicality, which can mean the difference between winning and losing on the track, with fashionable appearances that are essential to the sportscar genre.

In order to better control airflow, minimise turbulence around the tyres, and improve steering stability, a number of aerodynamic features (created with TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s motorsport expertise) have been added, including a front air dam and fully functional air vents paired with aero fins.

The GR86's interior was designed with a powerful horizontally arranged instrument panel that allows the driver a wide field of vision and aids in their ability to concentrate on the task of driving in mind. This arrangement was intended to provide the best usability and operation of the car's equipment. The design has a sense of harmony throughout.

Seven airbags are provided as standard in the cabin: front side and curtain shield airbags, plus a driver’s knee airbag. The safety and driver assistance package provides a high level of driver support, with functions including:

  • Pre-crash system
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Lane Departure Alert
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Automatic High Beam Assist
  • Collision Damage Mitigation Braking
