The Battle for Red Star: TGRSA Gears Up for Round 2 Showdown

By Jack Dickson

With Nabil Abdool leading the Media Challenge and Jason Coetzee hunting for the SATC championship lead, the stakes couldn't be higher. Throw in a forecast for rain and a demanding circuit layout, and we have all the ingredients for a classic weekend of South African motorsport.

The 2026 track racing season is shifting into high gear as TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa (TGRSA) heads to the technical Red Star Raceway in Mpumalanga for Round 2 of the Extreme Festival. Known for its demanding layout that rewards precision, Red Star is set to provide a stern test for drivers across both the GR Cup and the South African Touring Car (SATC) championships, especially with wet and overcast weather predicted to play a major role in the weekend's outcomes.

GR Cup Media Challenge: The Hunt for Abdool

In the GR Cup Media Challenge, all eyes are on Nabil Abdool, who arrives at Red Star with a perfect scorecard. After a dominant double victory at the season opener in Killarney, Abdool leads the standings with 14 points. However, the chasing pack is within striking distance; Craig Nicholson sits in second with nine points, followed closely by Tayedza Mbiri on eight. Justin Ford and our very own Kumbi Mtshakazi round out the top five, both looking to use the technical nature of the Mpumalanga circuit to close the gap on the championship leader.

SATC: Coetzee Chases the Top Spot

The South African Touring Car (SATC) category sees TGRSA in a strong position following a successful outing in Cape Town. Jason Coetzee enjoyed a stellar debut in his GR Corolla, claiming two second-place finishes to sit second in the title race with 25 points. His rapid adaptation to the machinery has made him an early-season favorite. Meanwhile, the reigning champion Michael van Rooyen is looking to bounce back. After fighting through technical gremlins at Round 1, Van Rooyen sits in fifth place with 17 points, remaining well within contention as he looks to bring his wealth of experience to bear on the tricky Red Star layout.

Precision and Strategy at Red Star

Red Star Raceway is a circuit that demands total focus, and the forecast for rain across both Friday’s practice and Saturday’s race day adds another layer of complexity to the weekend. For TGRSA, the objective is clear: maintain the momentum from the season opener while navigating the unpredictable elements. Whether it’s the intense media rivalry in the GR Cup or the high-stakes door-to-door action of the SATC, Round 2 promises to be a showcase of driver bravery and mechanical reliability.
