Mercedes-Benz Vans accelerates its transition to electric vehicles

Sales of Mercedes-Benz electric vans increased by one-third over the first nine months of the year compared to the same period last year as Mercedes-Benz Vans continues to speed up its electric transformation.

On October 26, the Mercedes-Benz Group revealed its third-quarter 2022 financial results. The findings showed stable financials in the third quarter of 2022, as well as a strong van market and cost control. In the third quarter of 2021, unit sales of Mercedes-Benz Vans totalled 88,000 vehicles; in the third quarter of this year, unit sales increased significantly to 104,000 vehicles globally. Despite continued shortages of semiconductors, Mercedes-Benz Vans' adjusted EBIT increased to €0.5 billion from €0.2 billion the year before.

Increased sales of electric vans are consistent with Mercedes-Benz Vans' goal to lead the way in environmentally friendly, all-electric transportation. Mercedes-Benz Vans and Rivian agreed to collaborate on the production of electric vans in the third quarter of 2022 after signing a memorandum of understanding to begin a strategic alliance. The two businesses intend to, among other things, utilise an existing Mercedes-Benz facility in Central or Eastern Europe to construct a brand-new, electric-only production facility. Within a few years, large electric vehicles from Rivian and Mercedes-Benz Vans are anticipated to leave the factory.

Mercedes-Benz Vans wants to lead the way in South Africa for both personal and professional use of electric mobility solutions. South Africa's third-quarter results also showed continued resilience. The Mercedes-Benz Vans South Africa team has already surpassed target sales in a few vehicle categories and client segments, despite the market facing numerous difficulties throughout 2022. The team also has its sights set on outstanding results in a number of business-related categories, including a record year for the highly sought-after Mercedes-Benz V-Class.
