South African BMW fans were treated to some exclusive reveals this weekend at the BMW M Festival, which is the 50th celebration of M-power. The second-generation BMW M2 Coupé touched down in Kyalami, much to the delight of the fans attending the M-Fest.

It’s been a hectic year for the BMW M division with the introductions of the hard-core M4 CSL, the first-ever M3 Touring, the M Hybrid V8 endurance racer, the updated M8, and most recently the XM SUV, its first plug-in hybrid and only its second-ever custom model.

Along with the standard 2 Series Coupé, the Mk2 variant will be produced in Mexico. For the time being, customers can only choose between an automatic or manual transmission and one engine option.

Performance figures show that the M2's engine, a 3.0-litre straight six that also powers the M3 and M4, produces 338kW and 550 Nm of torque right out of the gate, accelerating the coupé from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds in the manual transmission, while the automatic does the zero to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds with the standard top speed of 250 km/h.

The new M2, which may be ordered with a carbon fibre roof (optional), weighs about 1 680 kg, which is fairly substantial, but BMW states that the weight distribution is evenly distributed 50/50.
