We recently spent time sampling the updated Mahindra XUV300 in its range-topping W8 guise and while we were impressed with the pre-facelift model, the facelifted model still managed to impress us.
Dubbed the safest car in Africa after passing the Global New Car Assessment Programme (GNCAP) with flying colours, the XUV300 comes at an affordable price with a feature-packed cabin with neat looks. On the exterior, the most noticeable feature is the vertical LED DRLs, which Mahindra claims are likened to the tear lines on a Cheetah. The red hue our unit was dressed in was also appealing, as were the 17-inch alloys.
On the inside, you'll find an airy cabin with touchscreen infotainment that you can mirror with your smartphone. The sunroof lets in plenty of light, and the seats can be adjusted to a variety of positions. As a result of the price point, we did not object to the interior's materials being a mix of soft- and hard-touch plastics. There is no issue with legroom or headroom for rear passengers, except for those who are a bit tall. A few ergonomic quirks are apparent in the cabin, especially if you are tall. The centre console blocks your elbow when shifting.
The Mahindra XUV300 is powered by either a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine or a 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine, which our unit was equipped with. We have always praised the diesel engine in this unit and we feel that this is the engine to have. It delivers an impressive 85.8kW and 300Nm of torque via its 6-speed manual transmission and it makes the crossover move with no issues. The torque does get addictive as it really tries to pull you back into your seat. It does all this while maintaining a healthy fuel economy. Mahindra claims a 4.8L/100kms for the model, however, we managed 5.4L/100km during our tenure, a feat which is still commendable.
The suspension is also a great set-up, it's comfortable on-road and there are reasonable levels of noise, vibration and harshness. A steering wheel with adjustable settings allows you to adjust how easy it is to turn. Among them are Comfort, Sport, and Normal. As you lean toward Sport, the weight builds, but it never feels unnatural or overly heavy and it is the setting in which we spent most of the week.
The safety spec on W8 derivatives is well up to scratch and features traction control, 7 airbags, ABS, EBD, ISOfix anchors in the rear, seven airbags, electronic brake force distribution, a panic braking system, and hill-hold assist just to mention a few.
Overall, we think the Mahindra XUV300 is a great car. With a 1.5-litre turbodiesel engine, you'll get plenty of power and torque while maintaining low fuel consumption. It would be nice if the infotainment system were sleeker and more attractive. The Mahindra W8 turbodiesel we tested is R347 999 and is the range's top-spec. For that price, Mahindra has created a compelling crossover, especially in terms of safety and comfort. Feature-wise, it's excellent and we would recommend it to anyone.
