Driven: Isuzu D-Max 3.0 LSE Extended Cab

We have been sampling the Isuzu D-Max 3.0 LSE Extended Cab and were incredibly impressed with the model. The model looks extremely gorgeous, especially in its LSE trim.

The new Isuzu D-Max range's design and style offer bakkies a more contemporary and appealing appearance. Still, the much-improved engine and road noise reduction may be the most crucial aspect of the revamp. Isuzu's new seventh generation includes shorter headlights, a reworked front fascia and grille, and Bi-LED projector headlamps, as well as LED daytime running lights on LSE grade cars, for a sportier appearance.

The 18-inch, 6-spoke, machined, two-tone wheels and heavy All-Terrain tyres add to the D-Max's imposing appearance

The inside has also been appropriately remodelled, most notably with the dashboard's soft-touch texture and the layout's simplification. The central console is adorned with a sizable 9-inch touch-screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The inside has undergone more than simply aesthetic changes. It encourages lengthy excursions to remote locations with more than enough space for both people to never experience claustrophobia.

The expanded cab provides more space behind the front seats, with two storage compartments and pop-out windows.

The 3.0-litre Ddi turbo-diesel engine has also been modified and tuned for higher torque, lower engine speeds, and better acceleration. The power unit generates 140 kW of power at 3600 r/min and 450 Nm of torque at 1600 r/min. Noise levels have been significantly decreased, particularly during acceleration. The D-Max outperforms its rivals in terms of performance, thanks to a six-speed automatic transmission. The six-speed automatic gearbox has been expertly tuned to recognise the type of driving condition you're in and adjust accordingly. Perfect for use in the city and for times when you want power. A slight issue for us was how heavy the hydraulic steering wheel was. It can slightly put you off, however, it is quite communicative at the same time.

The model also comes equipped with a host of safety systems (below) with cruise control also being part of the package.

Safety is taken care of by anti-lock brakes, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BAS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control, Hill Start Assist (HSA), Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Trailer Sway Control.

During our time, we managed an acceptable 8l/100kms which we think is great for such a bakkie.

Overall, the Isuzu D-Max 3.0TD LSE is a superb bakkie. It is a strong, sturdy workhorse that also makes a great urban cruiser, striking a solid mix of comfort and toughness.
