Introduction:

We had the opportunity to spend time with Mercedes-Benz's latest addition to their electric vehicle lineup, the EQB which is based on the GLB. Positioned as a compact SUV, the EQB aims to combine practicality, versatility, and sustainable mobility. Equipped with advanced electric technology, it offers an impressive range and performance, making it an attractive option for eco-conscious drivers. Let's dive into our review of the Mercedes-Benz EQB.

Range and Performance:

During our test, we were able to achieve a range of 400 kilometres on a single charge. This figure is made possible by the EQB's utilization of a 66.5 kWh battery pack and two motors on duty (one on each axle). This powertrain configuration enables the EQB to deliver a robust output of 215kW and 520Nm of torque. Acceleration is brisk, with the EQB accomplishing the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 6.2 seconds, as claimed by Mercedes-Benz.

Exterior:

From a visual standpoint, the EQB embodies the distinctive Mercedes-Benz design language, albeit with a few styling considerations. The integration of features like the sealed grille adorned with Mercedes stars, the multi-spoke rims and the panoramic sunroof adds a touch of elegance. The rear of the EQB is capped off with a lightbar, which has become a design hallmark in modern vehicles.

Interior:
Mercedes-Benz has spared no effort in furnishing the interior with high-quality materials.

Step inside the EQB, and you'll be greeted by a luxurious and opulent cabin, taller passengers will be thankful for the excellent headroom. The MBUX digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen are fitted as standard. The EQB offers a spacious environment, and passengers are treated to numerous amenities, such as ambient interior lighting and comfortable seating. As modern as the interior was we were disappointed to have manual adjusting seats which we believe should not be the case in a car starting above R1.3 Million. Connectivity is abundant, with multiple USB Type-C ports and a 12V socket available throughout the cabin.

The EQB drives in near silence with a fairly well-insulated cabin barring some wind noise.

The EQB's driving experience is characterized by its serene and smooth performance. The two electric motors on each axle work in harmony delivering brisk acceleration and effortless power delivery. The ride quality is exceptional, we got the opportunity to test the Mercedes Benz EQB on many different road surfaces and the suspension faired really well ensuring a comfortable and refined journey. The EQB drives in near silence with a fairly well-insulated cabin barring some wind noise here and there. The all-wheel-drive system ensures the electric motors deliver instantaneous torque as soon as you put your foot on the pedal. The EQB is also fitted with the adaptive regenerative braking system which recuperates energy during deceleration.

Charging:
We managed to charge the EQB from 35% to 100% in just an hour and 15 minutes.

Charging the EQB is a breeze, with impressive charging speeds observed during our test. Utilizing the fastest charging station available at the Mall of Africa, we managed to charge the EQB from 35% to 100% in just an hour and 15 minutes, allowing for a 400km driving range. Mercedes-Benz offers an 11kW charger for home charging, which typically takes around 10 hours for a full charge. For faster charging, an optional 22kW charger is available, reducing charging time by half.

Conclusion:

The Mercedes-Benz EQB combines the practicality of an SUV with the benefits of electric driving, making it an appealing choice for eco-conscious consumers. As for pricing, the Mercedes-Benz EQB comes with a starting price of R1.3 Million, positioning it very competitively in the electric SUV market segment.
