Quick Facts

  • Price: From R434 900
  • Engine: 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine
  • Power/Torque: 120kW / 400Nm
  • Transmission: Eight-speed ZF Automatic Transmission

It's true, everything you have heard and read about the GWM P-Series Luxury Tourer, it's a breath of fresh air and brings something to the double cab bakkie scene which we have been longing for. The GWM P-Series P-Series Luxury Tourer is a bargain bakkie and features a luxurious cabin, fantastic technology as well as a great ride.

Launched in November 2020, the GWM P-Series Luxury Tourer impressed me so much at the launch that I needed an extended time with it, and finally, it graced my driveway.

Powered by a 2.0-litre turbo diesel petrol engine that produced 120Kw/400nm of torque, the big bakkie does not feel underpowered at all, in fact, the eight-speed ZF transmission works effortlessly in making sure that power is delivered when needed. Sure, there is some notable lag and I am hoping that in time GWM can better refine this. Off-roading is also handled exceptionally well as the P-Series features a Low range option.

Off-roading:

  • 2H, 4H Auto and 4L mode
  • 232 mm of ground clearance,
  • Approach angle 27 degrees
  • Departure angle 25 degrees
  • Hill Assist and Descent Control
The GWM P-Series Luxury Tourer
The interior in the GWM P-Series Luxury Tourer has been the talk of the town since its launch.

The interior is hands down the best bakkie interior of any bakkie in South Africa. The SUV based interior features a 9-inch infotainment screen that houses the vehicle's settings, features Android Auto/Apple Carplay and works very well for the 360-degree camera. My only issue with this infotainment screen and I have also discussed it when I drove the P-Series single cab, is how bright it gets even in its lowest setting. The 7-inch driver's digital display looks good and my only issue would be how dark it is during the day. The dashboard can be customized in various colours but I found the bronze inserts to work well with the overall look.

The Luxury Tourer continues its luxury status with the seats. The electrically adjustable leather heated seats with cross-stitched design patterns not only look great but feel very comfortable for all passengers.

Wireless charging, a 220V Charger, 4 USB Ports, steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, keyless entry and push-button start as well as a 12V completes the overall luxury in the interior.

Safety

  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane departure warning and Lane-keeping/centring,
  • Forward-collision warning,
  • Auto emergency braking
  • Traffic-sign recognition
  • Dual front airbags
  • ABS with brake assist
  • Electronic stability control
  • Rear parking sensors and tyre pressure monitors.

The GWM P-Series Luxury Tourer feels comfortable in any terrain.

On the exterior, the GWM P-Series Luxury Tourer the big and imposing bakkie features a new style logo as well as a huge grille that has chrome vertical bars. The bi-xenon LED headlamps also offer great vision. On the sides, a huge running board makes an appearance and makes entrance in the big bakkie easier.

The 18-inch wheels are also a great addition as they not only look great but offer a comfortable ride. In the rear, a plastic Bedliner with an easy to lift tailgate that also features a retractable step to make getting into the load bed easier.

Rounding off the exterior appearance; LED tail lights, reverse camera.

The GWM P-Series Luxury Tourer is available in 6 colours namely;

Cocoa Brown, Pure white, G4 Red (Test model), Atlantis Blue, Crystal Black and Pittsburgh Silver.

What I liked:

  • The big impossible body style.
  • The luxury inside the cabin
  • Refine ride quality no matter the terrain.
  • The attention I received.

What I did not like:

  • Lack of grab on handle for the driver.
  • Turbo lag.

Verdict

I think GWM/Haval is making great cars/bakkies and it is evident with GWM P-Series Luxury Tourer. The double cab has redefined bakkie luxury and for the price it comes in at, I would strongly suggest going for a test drive if you are in the market for a bakkie under R600k.
