The 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé

Quick Facts:

  • Price: From R930 000
  • Engine: From 2.0-litre petrol/diesel
  • Transmission: 8-speed auto
  • Power/Torque: From 135kW / to 500Nm

With the first generation having sold Almost 800k units sold since 2013 all over the world, the second generation is poised for just the same success if not greater. BMW launched the 2022 4 series Gran Coupe (a 5 door variant of the popular 4 Series coupe) and we had a go in it on the beautiful North Coast.

Pictured here is the 420i

The range is available with 3 engines, 2.0-litre petrol, the 420i with 135kW/300nm, a torquey 2.0-litre diesel with 140kW/400nm then a 3.0-litre petrol M440i capable of 285kW/500nm. All models are paired to an 8-speed sport Steptronic gearbox.

Coupled with the latest BMW design language, the prominent grille, a comfortable yet driver-oriented interior as well as some technological updates, the 4 Series Gran Coupe looks great in our humble opinion.

We have always been a fan of family coupes because of the added benefit of fitting in a family without having to fold doors or any other awkward “who gets to sit in the comfortable front seat” conversations. Being a couple of inches wider, taller and longer than the first generation, the 2022 4 series Gran Coupe is now roomier and much more comfortable in all seats.

BMW have perfected their M40 variants so much, we enjoyed sampling this M440i xDrive

First drive impressions had us smiling as we left the Oyster Box hotel on a sunny Monday morning. We had a go in the M440i xDrive and we instantly loved it. BMW has perfected their M40 variants which is something we appreciate a lot, the soundtrack and the ferocious gear changes with the added bonus of xDrive ensuring that you don’t have any oopsie. We hardly looked at our fuel gauge however, after a 140km stint, the needle had hardly moved, and this was with us really exploring the car, driving it in its hardest setting and really getting a feel for it. Power was also available no matter the gear, a true engineering masterpiece for the whole family to enjoy.

The added benefit of all-wheel drive inspires driver confidence.

Next up, the 420i variant, while this is the lowest powered model in the range, handling was superb, the weight did not deter it from moving swiftly along the N3 while maintaining great numbers in terms of fuel consumption.

While the M440i xDrive might’ve blown our socks off, the 420d was the cream of the crop. And we only imagine that most people will opt for this model. With the torque doing amazing so that you are always cruising or pushing when you need to, we found the 420d to be the best cruiser and the best in the range in terms of fuel consumption. The range just kept on climbing and climbing no matter how hard we pushed it. We found ourselves confidently saying that it would easily do over 1200kms on a single tank while keeping everyone happy.

The interior is typical BMW, very driver-oriented with fine materials all over the cabin

Another thing to note, the 4 Series Gran Coupè has 3 Isofix anchor points in the rear, so if you’re thinking of triplets? Go for it.

The optional Harman Kardon sound system is a tick that you need to tick.

Overall, the day we had sampling all three variants were good enough to get a feel of the second generation 4 Series Gran Coupè and we will report further when we have extended test drives with them in 2022.
