By: Blessing Mtshakazi

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, enthusiasts and adventurers seek vehicles that can withstand the toughest challenges nature throws their way. We flew down down to the Western Cape for the launch of the all-new Isuzu D-Max AT35; a collaboration between the renowned Japanese automaker Isuzu and the esteemed off-road specialists, Arctic Trucks. The result? A formidable and purpose-built pickup truck that redefines off-road capabilities.

Design and Exterior:

The Isuzu D-Max AT35's design is an amalgamation of ruggedness and refinement. Visually, it stands out from its more conventional siblings with prominent wheel arch extensions, a taller suspension setup, and aggressive all-terrain 35-inch tires. The front fascia is dominated by a bold grille, flanked by powerful LED headlights that illuminate the darkest trails. The Arctic Trucks' signature touches are evident, enhancing the D-Max's off-road credibility while still maintaining the D-Max's signature elegance.

Functionality plays a significant role in the design, with skid plates guarding vital components and a robust sports bar enhancing both aesthetics and cargo-carrying capabilities. Overall, the Isuzu D-Max AT35 exudes an aura of adventure while remaining true to its practical roots.

Interior and Comfort:

Slipping inside, the cabin of the D-Max AT35 strikes a pleasant balance between utilitarian toughness and passenger comfort. The spacious and ergonomically designed interior offers ample headroom and legroom, ensuring a pleasant ride even during extended journeys.

Premium materials and attention to detail are evident throughout the cabin, creating an inviting atmosphere. The seats are supportive and comfortable, making rough off-road journeys much more bearable. An intuitive infotainment system with smartphone connectivity and a user-friendly interface ensures that occupants stay connected and entertained, even in the remotest corners of the world.

Performance and Capability:

The true essence of the Isuzu D-Max AT35 lies in its off-road prowess. Under the hood, it boasts a reliable and capable 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that delivers 140kW and 450Nm of torque. The powertrain is mated to a robust 6-speed automatic transmission that shifts smoothly both on and off the road.

Where the D-Max AT35 truly shines is in its suspension and drivetrain modifications by Arctic Trucks. The raised and upgraded suspension provides an astonishing 266mm of ground clearance, allowing the vehicle to conquer any obstacle, while the approach angle improves to 33 degrees, the departure angle to 23 degrees and the break-over angle to 34 degrees. The inclusion of 35-inch BFGoodrich all-terrain tires further enhances the truck's grip and traction over diverse terrains.

The Isuzu D-Max AT35's prowess is further bolstered by an advanced four-wheel-drive system that offers multiple drive modes tailored to various off-road conditions. Engaging the low-range gearbox provides exceptional torque distribution, allowing the vehicle to crawl over rocky surfaces and steep inclines effortlessly.

The D-Max Arctic AT35 is based on the range-topping D-Max V-Cross derivative and will be assembled on local soil at the Isuzu Motors South Africa’s plant in Struandale, Gqeberha. The Struandale plant is the only ISUZU facility in the world accredited by Arctic Trucks to produce the D-MAX AT35. It is available on special order through ISUZU’s local dealer network, with limited production numbers guaranteeing exclusivity. The beefed-up and fully-kitted D-Max AT35 will cost R1,120,620.

Safety Features:

Isuzu leaves no stone unturned when it comes to safety, equipping the D-Max AT35 with a comprehensive suite of safety features. Advanced driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking, ensure that both driver and passengers are well-protected, not only during off-road adventures but also in everyday driving situations.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the Isuzu D-Max AT35 is a formidable off-road machine that excels in both practicality and adventure. Its marriage of Isuzu's reliable engineering and Arctic Trucks' off-road expertise results in a pickup truck that truly dominates any terrain it encounters. With its head-turning design, comfortable interior, and exceptional off-road capabilities, the D-Max AT35 is undeniably a force to be reckoned with in the world of off-road motoring.

It epitomizes the perfect fusion of utility, refinement, and adventure, making it a top choice for those who dare to explore the uncharted paths of the world.
